A very good copy, the binding well preserved with only light wear. There is some minor staining to a few pages, as shown in the photographs. In the scarce original dust jacket, showing light aging on the front only, and some tearing and wear along the spine, including at the head and foot.
A presentation copy warmly inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper:

Steinberg's uncommon first novel written in English, following several volumes published in Yiddish. Set within Chicago's Jewish immigrant community during the Depression, the novel explores poverty, anti-Semitism, social injustice, and the struggle to preserve dignity in modern urban life. The dust jacket features contemporary endorsements by Sherwood Anderson and Llewellyn Jones. The volume is illustrated by S. Witkewitz, Louis Lodowick, Rinaldo Cuneo, Hilda Katz, George Grosz, and others.
A scarce first edition, especially uncommon in the original dust jacket.
