First Edition. Original publisher’s olive cloth with paper spine label as issued, top edge olive, in the original dust jacket. The cloth shows a small stain to both front and rear boards, but the binding remains firm and square, and the contents are clean and in good order. The dust jacket is very good and quite bright, with minimal chipping at the head and foot of the spine and a few small nicks and light rubbing to the edges; the spine is age-toned. Small 8vo. 116 pp.
With a price label and an early ownership inscription reading, “Property of the University Drama Committee, January 1938,” and an additional spine label inserted into the binding of the final page.
Particularly interesting is the survival of the original Samuel French (Canada) copyright notice label, stating that the play was fully protected by copyright, that performance fees were payable in advance, and specifying the required wording for programs and advertising—an uncommon piece of original performance-rights ephemera.
The 1936 first edition of MISS ELIZABETH BENNET is a rare dramatic adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice by A. A. Milne, best known as the creator of Winnie-the-Pooh. The play enjoyed notable success on the World stages and represents an important example of Milne’s lesser-seen theatrical work.
