RARE GLAZED CERAMIC ARTWORK - PORTRAIT OF A RECLINING WOMAN ON A BULL.

Dedham, Colchester.

1st Edition. Engraved by Quentin Bell. Dedham is a village within the borough of Colchester in northeast Essex, England

A Terracotta glazed artwork: 8 1/2" x 11" etched by Quentin Bell. A portrait of a young lady dressed in an odalisque pose with beautiful black, greens and black glazes.
The woman “Europa” lounging on a bull. It relates to the Greek myth of Europa and the Bull but more pertinently Europa (and her Bull) have a strong symbolic relevance for Europe (it takes its name from her). This design would very likely have been done by Bell around the time of the first European Referendum, in 1975, after which England joined the E.U:

Front Etched Inscription 4 1/2" x 2" Terracotta glazed description:
CFH Shephard Esq
Heath House
Dedham, Colchester, Essex
Verso: Block letters etched:
EVROPA or the Referendum and (Quentin Bell’s potter’s mark which is a bell made from an inverted’B’) Quentin Bell

Virginia Woolf's nephew and official biographer Quentin Bell, hones his multi-faceted talents in this rare and stunning etching.
