Item #31019 THUNDER SHIELD. Frederic F. Van de Water.

THUNDER SHIELD.

Indianapolis: The Bobbs-Merrill Company, 1946.

1st Edition. Hardcover. First Edition. 8vo., pp. 384. Yellow topstain. Hiram Shaw, alias Badger Heart strayed from a wagon train at age 12 to become in the end the son of Thunder Shield & then the second Thunder Shield, Cheyenne to the core but still White to the quick. A tale of the West & of its History, encompassing the vaster conflicts of massacre & retaliation & betrayal, up to the supremely dramatic moment when Custer makes his last at Little Big Horn. This is a rare near fine copy, lettering gilt having migrated a bit on to the delicate pastel green cloth at the spine, in a near fine dustwrapper reinforced on the back with neat pieces of brown paper strips carefully glued at the folds. A bright copy crudely but remarkably well preserved more by instinct than archival knowledge. A handsome book.
