THE DUKE COMES BACK.

New York: Doubleday, Doran & co, 1933.

First Edition. First U.S. edition, hardcover (8.0 x 5.5”, 20.0 x 14.0 cm) bright orange cloth with black lettering and top edge stained black, original dust jacket, 227 pp.

Before Rocky was a twinkle in his father’s eye, the famed pugilist Duke Wellington was scrapping it out in between the ropes. In this installment of the Duke series of novels by Lucian Cary, the Duke “stages a dramatic comeback to face the Tartar Tornado for the sake of Susan and a hundred grand”, so states the synopsis on the front dust jacket. This novel served as the basis for two films, The Duke Comes Back (1937), and The Duke of Chicago (1949)

Our copy is in very good condition. The orange cloth remains bright. Pages show light, uniform toning and minor handling stains consistent with age. Binding is tight and square.

The Dust Jacket features a splendid, realistic colour wrapper illustration by noted mid-century artist Irving Nurick. The jacket is preserved in a protective Mylar sleeve and shows light edge wear. The inside flap corners are neatly trimmed, but the original $2.00 price remains fully intact on the rear flap.
