NEUROMANCER Advance Proof Copy.
West Bloomfield, Michigan: Phantasia Press, 1986.
1st Edition. Soft cover. First Phantasia Press Edition. Rare Advance Typesetting Proof Copy. Cerlux-bound, 231 pages, preceded by six preliminary pages. An exceptionally scarce production state, with only a handful of copies believed to have been produced.
The proof consists of 8½" x 11" typeset sheets produced by DIGITYPE Typesetters of Beachwood, Ohio, retaining the printer's original crop marks, pagination, and production markings. Each page is dated “Thursday, April 3, 1986” and marked “TAKE 1.” The copyright/imprint page contains the production notation: “205 JOB 3198 -0001-02 PHANTASIA REV: 04-01 EXP: 04-01 SB SIZ: 52.08.” The final typeset page bears the notation “213/230 pages.” The publisher's “Advance Copy” is stamped in red on the front cover.
The copyright page identifies this as the First Phantasia Press Edition, with copyright © 1984 William Gibson and copyright © 1986 William Gibson for the introduction. Published by arrangement with the Berkley Publishing Group. ISBN 0-932096-41-7.
Of particular bibliographical interest, the final page of the novel retains Gibson's authorial dateline “Vancouver / July 1983,” dating the completion of the work several years before this 1986 typesetting proof was produced.
An unusually scarce pre-publication production artifact of Gibson's landmark cyberpunk novel. Unlike a conventional advance reading copy, this example preserves the actual typesetting stage of the Phantasia Press edition, including the dated proof sheets, “TAKE 1” designation, printer's crop marks, pagination, production codes, and publisher's red “Advance Copy” stamp.
Near Fine condition.
Winner of the Nebula Award, Hugo Award, and Philip K. Dick Award. Selected for James Gunn's The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction and included by David Pringle among Science Fiction: The 100 Best Novels.
The enduring influence of NEUROMANCER continues to grow: Apple's forthcoming 10-episode television adaptation, starring Callum Turner as Case and Briana Middleton as Molly, is scheduled to premiere globally on January 22, 2027. Gibson himself serves as an executive producer on the series.
