First Edition. Bell, Julian. WORK FOR THE WINTER MORE OR LESS FOR CHRISTMAS. Inscribed By Julian Bell. N.P. N.D. (ca. 1935). Privately printed for the author. 8vo. 8 pp. First Edition. Stiff white wrappers printed in black. This rare booklet was effectively an elaborate Christmas card containing six poems, five of which were later collected by the Hogarth Press in 1936 and similarly titled Work For The Winter. The later book contains changes only to the poem, The River Flows. Inscribed by Julian Bell in a strong hand on the upper inside cover: "To Margaret / From Julian". An exceedingly uncommon Woolf family item from Vanessa Bell's son who was killed just two years later (1937) in the Spanish Civil War. "The last time I saw Julian was at Clive's, two days before he went to Spain...I was determined not to think about the risks, because, subconsciously I was sure he would be killed; that is I had a couchant unexpressed certainty, from Thoby's death I think; a legacy of pessimism, which I have decided never to analyze". (VW QB2 App. C).
