Item #31731 A YANKEE IN KING ARTHUR'S COURT. Mark Twain, S. Clemens.

A YANKEE IN KING ARTHUR'S COURT.

Toronto: Rose Publishing, 1890.

First Canadian Edition. Hardcover. Twain, Mark [Clemens, Samuel Langhorne]. A YANKEE IN KING ARTHUR'S COURT. Toronto: Rose Publishing, 1890. [Copyright 1889]. Decorated publisher's brown cloth. First Canadian Edition. Very similar to the American edition including the patterned endpapers though slightly different in size & some details. BAL 3429: First state of page 59 as seems to be true of all of the later contemporary Canadian editions; perfect type on page 72. [McBride and Ahearn are incorrect in their assessments of the true First Canadian Edition which should have three figures on the cover, the "Rose Publishing Co." imprint on the spine, & 1890 on the title page, all present with this example. Deposited on Dec. 11, 1889, six days after the American Edition. This is a very good copy showing modest use; the hinges strengthened, & with a neat tape repair to a tear that affected several pages. An interesting copy of this unusual edition. The novel explains the tale of Hank Morgan, a 19th-century resident of Hartford, Connecticut who, after a blow to the head, awakens to find himself inexplicably transported back in time to early medieval England at the time of the legendary King Arthur. A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court was originally titled: A Yankee in King Arthur's Court. Some early editions are titled A Yankee at the Court of King Arthur.
