First Edition. Hardcover. Carson, Rachel. THE SEA AROUND US. New York: Oxford University Press, 1951. First Edition, Very Early Issue points; matte boards & dustwrapper finish [2 reviews on the front flap]. A decent copy, about fine in the first state matte printed boards, in a very good early state matte dustwrapper. However not the very first issue which calls for other issue points. About as close to the earliest state that is likely available. This was Carson's second book & it was a blockbuster launching her into the public eye, winning both the 1952 National Book Award in nonfiction & a Burroughs Medal in nature writing. Nine chapter of fourteen were serialized in The New Yorker, beginning on June 2, 1951, & the book was published on July 2 by Oxford. The serialization created a very large popular response, & the book was the subject of the feature review in The New York Times Book Review the day before publication. One chapter: The Birth of an Island" was published in The Yale Review. It won the George Westinghouse Science Writing prize from the American Association for the Advancement of Science & inspired an Academy Award winning documentary. The book has been translated into over thirty languages.
